A fairly primitive MacEasyTutu install guide - v 2.3
2007-10-27 by Gorilym
Miscellaneous notes
I. About this guide:
This document is best considered as a sort of MacEasyTutu appendix to I Rahn Maedin's BG1TuTuFAQ - so if something is not covered here, check to see if it's covered there. At some point I hope to combine the FAQ & this guide into a single unit.
II. BG1Tutu itself:
BG1Tutu is basically a 'total conversion' that allows the original 'Baldur's Gate' to be played with the improvements and features of the 'Baldur's Gate II' engine (BG1Tutu - BG1-To-2). Once installed, you won't be able to start BGII games with the MacEasyTutu installation - so maintaining separate BG II & MacEasyTutu installations is highly recommended. To save HD space, you can make symbolic links to share duplicate data between the two installations - doing so is particularly worthwhile with the 'CD2' through 'CD5' folders, because their content is 100 % static. An example of symbolic link creation: To link the CD2 folder from 'BG2_Base' to 'BG2_Clone', I would first remove the CD2 folder from folder 'BG2_Clone', then launch the Terminal and type "ln -s /Applications/BG2_Base/CD2 /Applications/BG2_Clone/CD2" (without the quotes, of course).
III. EasyTutu itself:
Macready's streamlined EasyTutu distribution is renowned for its stability and overall quality, and the Mac version essentially adheres to it completely. In general, following these steps will result in a stable build which is quite simply superior to conventional D-I-Y Tutu conversions. However, due to local variables being involved, I can't guarantee it will work perfectly for everyone. If you do encounter any problems with MET, please notify me and I'll try to help. At the time of writing MacEasyTutu is a conversion of Macready's 23 Dec 2006 release of EasyTutu_ToB and EasyTutu_SoA - refer to the EasyTutu changelog for the version specifics. The Easy Tutu FAQ may also be of interest - bear in mind though, that some of the information therein only applies to the (original) PC version of EasyTutu.
IV. MacEasyTutu requirements:
MacEasyTutu is currently configured to work with either a TotSC-SoA or a TotSC-ToB setup. In other words, you will need copies of both 'Baldur's Gate', 'Baldur's Gate II' & the expansion pack 'Tales of the Sword Coast' to use it, while ownership of the BG II expansion 'Throne of Bhaal' is not required. At some point a non-TotSC MacEasyTutu may also be possible.
V. Very important note about character creation and ToB MacEasyTutu:
The ToB version of MacEasyTutu is inevitably subject to the behaviour described in the BG1TuTuFAQ. Most importantly this means that a workaround is necessary for all classes and kits to be available for player character selection, as the attempted creation of single-class characters (excepting barbarians, mages, monks, and sorcerers) will result in immediate crashes. The presence of an additional, 'non-Tutu-ed' BG II installation is required to be able to completely circumvent this behaviour, but it's not strictly necessary - the full details are in the "Character Creation Work-around" & "How To Create & Play A Wild Mage Character" sections of the FAQ.
VI. General troubleshooting:
The following troubleshooting notes apply generally to installations of BG II, whether BG1Tutu-ed or not.
- If you get an error message when attempting to save your game to disk, check your BG II folder for the presence of a file named 'temp' - if it's present, delete it and put a new folder with the same name in its place.
- If running BG II on a dual processor system you may experience some oddities when saving games and loading areas. In my experience disabling the second processor for the duration of play effectively eliminates such quirks.
- If running OS 10.4.x Spotlight indexing has been known to interfere with the saving of games to disk. To circumvent this launch System Preferences, navigate to the Spotlight preference pane and exempt your BG II folder from Spotlight indexing (under the Privacy tab).
VII. Mods compatible with MacEasyTutu:
The Tutu Fixpack, all the mods with an EasyTutu prefix, The BG1NPC project, Lure of the Sirines Call, Finch NPC, Indira NPC, Mur'Neth NPC, Herbs Add-in, The Grey Clan Episode 1, Song And Silence, Sword Coast Stratagems, The D0Tweak Pack, The BG2 Tweak Pack, One Pixel Productions, TutuGUI & TutuGUIFont (note: a mod not listed here isn't necessarily incompatible, it might simply be untested).
VIII. Fixpacks: (Baldurdash etc.)
The EasyTutu distribution already includes both BG 1 & BG 2 Baldurdash fixes, so unlike conventional Tutu there is no need to install either. The BG2 Fixpack should not be installed on top of a MacEasyTutu installation at this time. Relevant Fixpack changes are being implemented by Macready into the core EasyTutu distributions.
IX. "Unconventional MacEasyTutu":
Reports indicate that game data from the PC versions of BG1 / TotSC can be combined with the Mac versions of BG II / ToB (should work without ToB as well, but that's untested) to create a fully functional MacEasyTutu. If you're a Mac BGII owner having trouble finding copies of the (now out of print) Mac versions of BG I and TotSC, a "PC -> Mac MET" setup may be your best option. Basically, instead of making a TotSC full install with the Assistant in Step II, you need to manually copy all the data and movie files from the PC game discs into folders named 'bg1data' and 'bg1movies' respectively; apart from that the guide's regular instructions should apply.

The basic step-by-step guide to installation
Section A: If you have Throne of Bhaal
Note: Standard BG II data will be overwritten by the installation of MacEasyTutu. If you wish to retain the option to revert your EasyTutu installation to standard BG II, I strongly recommend that you either make backups of all the files that will be overwritten by step 5, or - if you have the excess HD space and / or a DVD burner - to simply make an archive of the entire install before making any changes to it (You might also want to make a similar archive of the BG 1 installation, if only to save time in the future).
Note: with a full install of TotSC its 'data' folder should contain exactly 152 .BIF files. (in my case the total size of the folder is reported as 2352425630 bytes) The 'movies' folder should contain exactly 7 .BIF files, and 36 files in total. (in my case the total size of the folder is reported as 273108062 bytes) The previous figures are based on the original 5 disc BG1 set with separate 1 disc expansion - the figures for the 6 disc reissued set may differ, though it seems unlikely. If you use the 6 disc reissued set and the figures do differ from those detailed above, I'd be interested in hearing about it.
*: The optional steps 8 through 12 all require the applicable files to be downloaded and expanded. For more info on the 'official' EasyTutu add-ons detailed in steps 7-10 please visit the main EasyTutu site.
Section B: If you don't have Throne of Bhaal
Note: Standard BG II data will be overwritten by the installation of MacEasyTutu. If you wish to retain the option to revert your EasyTutu installation to standard BG II, I strongly recommend that you either make backups of all the files that will be overwritten by step 5, or - if you have the excess HD space and / or a DVD burner - to simply make an archive of the entire install before making any changes to it (You might also want to make a similar archive of the BG 1 installation, if only to save time in the future).
